Publication order
Reading in publication order preserves the main story’s progression and keeps Stellarlune before Unraveled, allowing Sophie’s account of Keefe’s absence to unfold before his parallel perspective fills in what happened during that period. It also places Unlocked naturally between Legacy and Stellarlune, so its narrative portion functions as the bridge between them.[1-12]
The trade-off is that publication order does not reproduce the fictional timeline exactly. Unraveled begins before some of the events in Stellarlune, while the two graphic novels revisit the opening novel rather than advancing alongside the later prose books. Readers primarily interested in comparing overlapping events may therefore prefer the chronological order below, although that route changes when Keefe’s parallel story is encountered and still cannot assign Elysian a precise fictional position.[10-14]
Therefore, it’s best to read the Keeper of the Lost Cities books in publication order, with the graphic novels offering an optional adaptation, by following this sequence:[1-48]

Chronological order
The prose timeline follows the main series sequence through Unlocked. Unraveled begins shortly after Keefe leaves Havenfield and overlaps the events later shown in Stellarlune, so it is placed before Stellarlune here by its starting point, even though the two books overlap. Elysian is retained at the end because it is a supplied main book, but its fictional chronological position is not yet established.[1-14]
The main advantage of chronological order is that Keefe’s departure and human-world journey are encountered at the point when they begin, making the overlap between Unraveled and Stellarlune easier to follow and compare. It also keeps the graphic adaptations beside the story they retell.[10-11][13-14]
The trade-off is that chronological order changes the first-reading flow around Stellarlune and Unraveled. Reading Unraveled first gives Keefe’s perspective before Sophie’s storyline presents his absence and eventual return, so information reaches the reader in a different sequence than it does in publication order.[10-11]
Alternatively, the Keeper of the Lost Cities books may be read in chronological order by following this sequence:[1-14]

Unraveled | 2024[39-42] | Begins after Keefe leaves Havenfield and overlaps the events of Stellarlune. |
| 11 | ![]() |

Works in sequence
The prose storyline from Keeper of the Lost Cities through Stellarlune forms the principal reading path, including the narrative portion of Unlocked. Unraveled expands an overlapping period rather than continuing beyond Stellarlune’s ending. The graphic novels are supplementary to the prose path, but readers choosing the adaptation need its two parts in sequence.[1-14]
Main books

1. Keeper of the Lost Cities

Keeper of the Lost Cities (2012)[15-16] introduces twelve-year-old Sophie Foster, whose telepathy leads her from human life into the elvin world. As she joins Foxfire Academy and finds a new home, unexplained knowledge and threats raise questions about her past.
As the opening novel, it establishes the relationships, abilities, and mysteries that the later books build upon.[1]
2. Exile

Exile (2013)[17-18] follows Sophie as her bond with a rare alicorn attracts attention while troubling changes affect her abilities. A dangerous assignment and clues connected to the Black Swan draw her further into the mystery of her creation.
This installment develops the mental abilities and damaged-mind storyline that become central to subsequent conflicts.[2]
3. Everblaze

Everblaze (2014)[19-20] places Sophie under pressure to use her abilities while dangerous fires and competing interests threaten the Lost Cities. Her search for answers connects the current conflict with secrets surrounding her adoptive family.
This book turns earlier suspicions into a confrontation that changes her group’s relationship with elvin authority and leads into Neverseen.[3]
4. Neverseen

Neverseen (2015)[21-22] follows Sophie and her friends as they seek refuge with the Black Swan beyond their familiar homes and school. A gnomish plague and encounters with banished elves widen the conflict to other communities.
New allies and disputes between species expand the rebellion storyline and establish the circumstances behind the investigations in Lodestar.[4]
5. Lodestar

Lodestar (2016)[23-24] follows Sophie’s investigation of a mysterious symbol while warnings of an attack threaten the people closest to her. Attempts to understand the Neverseen’s plans unfold alongside preparations for an interspecies Peace Summit.
Its linked investigations bring existing personal and political conflicts together, leaving a crisis that Nightfall takes up.[5]
6. Nightfall

Nightfall (2017)[25-26] sends Sophie and her allies in search of a facility connected to a crisis involving her human family. The investigation draws them into long-concealed experiments and competing plans within the Neverseen.
It reconnects Sophie’s human background with the central struggle while developing the experimentation storyline that extends through later installments.[6]
7. Flashback

Flashback (2018)[27-28] follows Sophie as the consequences of an earlier arrest bring the Vacker family under scrutiny. A new attack forces her and her friends to reconsider their protection while another crisis exposes hidden connections between species.
This novel turns family history into a wider political problem, changing the circumstances under which Sophie’s group operates.[7]
8. Legacy

Legacy (2019)[29-30] gives Sophie new leadership responsibilities while her search for her biological parents challenges her place in elvin society. Keefe’s family history and threats involving the dwarven capital reveal another strand of the enemy’s plans.
Its developments in leadership, identity, and altered abilities provide the context for the events of Unlocked.[8]
9. Unlocked

Unlocked (2020)[31-34] combines records about the Lost Cities with a narrative following Sophie and Keefe after the events in Loamnore. Their separate responses to new abilities and the Neverseen conflict move the story beyond the ending of Legacy.
Its narrative bridges the transition into Stellarlune, so the reference material should not lead readers to treat the whole book as optional.[9]
10. Stellarlune

Stellarlune (2022)[35-38] follows Sophie’s search for Keefe alongside her investigation of an ancient source of power. Recovered memories and competing factions bring earlier mysteries into the same pursuit.
It advances the main conflict while presenting the events that Unraveled later revisits from Keefe’s perspective.[10]
11. Unraveled

Unraveled (2024)[39-42] follows Keefe’s attempt to control his abilities while living among humans. His travels develop into an investigation of his mother’s activities and the human research connected to her plans.
This parallel narrative fills in what Keefe was doing during his absence from Stellarlune. Reading it afterward preserves Sophie’s original perspective before adding information that her storyline does not reveal.[11]
