Works in sequence
The main continuing narrative is the core reading experience: Unwind, UnWholly, UnSouled, and Undivided. Beginning with the introduction of Connor, Risa, and Lev, the story moves through their struggle against unwinding. These books carry the principal arc and should be read in order.[3][5-6][21][4-8]
1. Unwind

Unwind (2007)[9-10] establishes the dystopian setting in which teenagers face legal dismantling for their body parts. Connor is a runaway marked for unwinding; Risa, a state ward discarded by institutional necessity; Lev, a tithe raised for sacrifice.[3]
This book introduces the resistance network, the Graveyard, and the moral conflict that drives the series.[3]
2. UnStrung

UnStrung (2012)[11-12] is a focused Lev story occurring after his runaway experiences but before his more public role in the conflict. By introducing the Arápache reservation, alternative transplant practices, and Wil Tashi’ne, this story expands the world beyond the main fugitives.[4]
Though not a replacement for the core novels, this story gives important context for Lev, Wil, Una, and the reservation storyline. Reading it after Unwind provides a richer understanding before continuing the main narrative.[4]
3. UnWholly

UnWholly (2012)[13-14] resumes the main storyline after Unwind. Connor now carries the burden of leadership at the Graveyard, Risa is drawn into Proactive Citizenry’s public campaign, and Lev becomes involved with rescued tithes and resistance politics.[5]
Cam, Starkey, Miracolina, and Nelson are introduced in this novel, extending the conflict from mere fugitive survival to organized ideological, corporate, and political struggle.[5]
4. UnSouled

UnSouled (2013)[15-16] continues the fugitives’ search for the origins of the unwinding industry. Connor and Lev pursue information tied to Sonia and Janson Rheinschild, while Risa, Cam, Starkey, Hayden, Nelson, and others move through intersecting strands of the same conflict.[6]
This book expands the series by connecting personal survival to suppressed technology, institutional manipulation, and the machinery sustaining unwinding.[6]
5. UnDivided

UnDivided (2014)[17-18] brings the principal narrative arc to its resolution. Connor, Risa, Lev, Cam, Grace, Starkey, Hayden, and other major characters converge around the future of unwinding, the organ printer, black-market harvesting, and public resistance.[7]
It depends on the preceding novels for character positions, political context, and emotional stakes.[7]
6. UnBound

UnBound (2015)[19-20] is a related story collection rather than the next step in the main plot. Its episodes expand the dystology through backstories, side stories, and aftermath involving characters such as Nelson, Risa, Roland, Lev, Wil, Colton, Hayden, Miracolina, Cam, and Argent.[8]
Because it spans multiple points in the timeline and relies on established context, it is best read after the core novels. It also includes the novella UnStrung.[8]

In addition to the core novels, the supplementary works—UnStrung and UnBound—expand the series with side material, character background, and wider-world context. While these works are not the backbone of the main narrative, they enhance the experience. Readers seeking the fullest version of the dystology should include the supplementary books after reading the core four.((Unwind. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. ISBN: 9781416912040.
